• Precision Machining Technology displayed items produced in class, including a steam engine, airplane motor, air motor, cannon, ball in a box, and puzzles.

• Architectural Drafting and Design Technology displayed detailed designs, such as the layout of the gazebo which was the Class of 2011′s Senior Class Gift.

Friday, October 7, 2011 is First Friday Scranton’s College Night!

Be sure to check out the Johnson College exhibit! The exhibit will be at the Connell Building (129 N. Washington Ave, Downtown Scranton) from 6pm-9pm. We’ll have pieces from our Precision Machining Technology and Architectural Drafting & Design Technology programs as well as the creative work of individual students! There will also be live music provided by our students!

Andrew Zwanch ‘82, Johnson College’s PMT Chairperson, as well as a number of the College’s PMT students and alumni used their expertise to help administer the SkillsUSA testing to five local contestants.

The community service project came about after the League’s Maureen O’Malley requested that Andrew Zwanch ‘82, Precision Machining Technology Chairperson, and his students help perform some much needed repairs around the baseball field. The project involved straightening and welding together a section of wrought iron railing and repairing areas of the metal steps alongside the field’s clubhouse.

Precision Machining Technology students receive over forty hours of welding training during their time in the program. The project for Marvine Dutch Gap Little League gave them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real world setting. With the guidance of Mr. Zwanch and Matthew Sleboda ‘84, Technical Assistant, the students prepared the material, followed detailed instructions on the process, and learned how to operate a portable welding unit.

“The students agreed that it was nice to be able to help out the Little League because it is a vital member of the community,” says Mr. Zwanch.

SkillsUSA connects students and teachers of public career and technical programs with industry leaders, promoting a skilled workforce in America. The SkillsUSA Championship showcases the trade skills of students. The contest begins locally then continues to state and national levels.

Students from ten different vocational schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania competed in the District I Competition. Johnson College hosted exams in Automotive Service Specialization, Automotive Technician Technology, Precision Machining Technology, and Power Equipment Technology.

Johnson College students helped to administer the testing and Robert Murray ‘82, Automotive Technology Chair, Andrew Zwanch ‘82, Precision Machining Technology Chair, and Michael Novak, Diesel Truck Technology Chair, acted as judges.

Sterling Oddo, a representative from NAPA, gave the students a brief overview of the company’s vision, resources, and locations. NAPA is a leader in its industry with more than 380,000 parts, 6,000 store locations, and 64 distribution centers.

Mr. Oddo exhibited a variety of tools. At the close of the demonstration, students were able to examine these items and take a look inside the NAPA Tool Truck. Each student was also presented with a NAPA Student Discount Card. The card offers significant savings, allowing them to build up their own professional tool collection while still in college.

David Manasek, President of Manasek Auto Parts, Inc./NAPA Auto Parts, values the partnership between NAPA and Johnson College. Mr. Manasek explained to the students, “The quality of education you are receiving here at Johnson College is a great asset to you in the job market today.
