Justine Olsommer ’12, a freshman in the Veterinary Technology Program, is competing to be this year’s Greene-Dreher-Sterling (GDS) Fair Queen!

The GDS Fair takes place in Newfoundland, PA from August 31, 2010 to September 6, 2010. The Fair Queen Pageant will be held on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010.

Should Ms. Olsommer win the competition, she would represent and promote the GDS Fair as well as the industry it was founded on – agriculture. According the fair’s website: “The purpose of the Fair Queen Competition is to encourage the promotion of Agricultural Fairs and create better relations between youths and adults in both rural and urban settings.” These duties would continue throughout the year.

“I have grown up with a strong agricultural background… I am attending Johnson College to enhance my knowledge of animals,” states Ms. Olsommer. “I believe that this along with my personality would make me a very good Fair Queen.”

Ms. Olsommer is one of five girls in the running this year. She humbly shares, “Each one of us would make a great Fair Queen. The judges have a very hard decision to make!”

As a result of the efforts of Johnson College’s Safety Committee, the College was recently approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

One year ago, Johnson College formed a Safety Committee comprised of faculty and staff members from various departments. Michael Novak, Diesel Truck Technology Chairperson, and Joseph Musheno ’78, Carpentry & Cabinetmaking Technology Chairperson, were chosen as the committee’s first co-chairs.

“We all made a commitment to safety,” Mr. Novak states. “The College made a commitment to form the committee. The Safety Committee members made a commitment to doing the work. And all faculty and staff made a commitment to helping the committee carry out its duties.”

As part of the state approval process, the Safety Committee established a comprehensive inspection list for each part of campus and started performing quarterly inspections. All buildings and outdoor campus areas are routinely inspected so that safety issues can be addressed and resolved as soon as possible.

The committee also instituted the use of Accident and Near Miss forms by faculty and staff. Accident forms list the details of an incident and how to prevent a repeat occurrence. Near Miss forms take a proactive approach, allowing employees to highlight possible safety issues before an accident can occur.

The certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation allows Johnson College to take advantage of discounts from insurance carriers when it comes to their employees’ Workers’ Compensation coverage. This specifically focuses on the employer/employee association within the College.

“The savings are only a bonus. Our priority was making a safer Johnson College,” says Mr. Musheno.

Freshmen were welcomed to the Johnson College family at New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 19, 2010.

Dr. Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO of Johnson College, greeted the Class of 2012 at the start of the day. Dr. Pipinski shared, “All of the faculty and staff look forward to this time of year. It’s great to have the campus bustling again and to meet new students.”

The theme of this year’s orientation as well as the College’s Welcome Week, scheduled for August 23-27, 2010, is “Islanded an Education at Johnson College.” A number of fun, Hawaiian themed events were scheduled in order to connect students to the campus community.

The goal of New Student Orientation was to inform and entertain. The Orientation Committee once again invited Keith Karkut to perform his educational and engaging Hypnotic Intoxication presentation, which taught students about the dangers of alcohol abuse. Students also participated in various team building exercises.

“Orlando 5-0,” a campus-wide scavenger hunt, allowed participants to learn about and explore the College. During the scavenger hunt, teams of students collected a number of puzzle pieces. Each group assembled their pieces once the hunt concluded. At the end of the day, all of the groups connected their separate sections into one large puzzle.

“We wanted to illustrate that each student, each instructor, each staff member, each alumnus is an integral part of our campus community. Without each piece, our puzzle would be incomplete,” states Devon Fawcett, Director of Student Life.

A returning student helps an incoming student work on a section of the puzzle.

Johnson College will hold Cars on Campus on Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The car show will take place rain or shine on the College’s campus, located off exit 190 on I-81. All proceeds from the event will benefit Johnson College funded scholarships.

Johnson College last held its car show in 2005. Current Precision Machining Technology student and car enthusiast Rudi Dickinson ’11, of Dalton, approached Tami Pease, Johnson College’s Associate Director of Development, about reviving the event. Mr. Dickinson is now serving as one of the event’s honorary co-chairs along with Alumnus Michael Meoni ’75 of Archbald.

“Bringing the car show back to Johnson College is truly exciting,” Mr. Dickinson shared. “And to have all of the proceeds go directly back to students in the form of scholarships makes it even more meaningful and worthwhile.”

The event’s Presenting Sponsor is Manasek Auto Parts, Inc. in Dickson City. Owner David Manasek is a dedicated community friend and member of Johnson College’s Automotive Technology Program Advisory Board. Mr. Manasek stated, “It’s an honor to sponsor an event that allows Johnson College to bring the community together for a great cause.” Additional sponsors include McGrail, Merkel, Quinn & Associates and Snyder & Clemente.

Admission to Cars on Campus is $5.00 per car. The family-friendly event will feature food, refreshments, and entertainment. Please note that no alcoholic beverages will be permitted on campus.

Those interested in exhibiting their car can pre-register by August 30, 2010 for $8.00 or register the day of the show for $10.00. Approximately twenty different classes are welcome. Awards will be presented in a variety of categories.

For general information or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, please call Tami Pease at 570-702-8909 or email carsoncampus@johnson.edu.
