Johnson College Thanks Donors at Spirit of Giving Reception

In August, Johnson College hosted its President’s Spirit of Giving Reception at the Colonnade in Scranton. This annual event celebrates the past year’s achievements and thanks the donors who made it all possible.

At this year’s Spirit of Giving Reception, three students shared their inspiring stories with the College’s faculty, staff, alumni, and donors.

“I think of Johnson College like the hand that drops a pebble into a pond. It may just be a little pebble, but the ripples that are created go on and on,” stated Carly Leach ’12, Radiologic Technology student.

Justine Olsommer ’12, Veterinary Technology student, shared, “Because of my experiences, I have the opportunity to meet many new faces and form close relationships with not only classmates, but faculty, staff, board members, community members and possible future employers. In my book of life, these relationships are not just temporary; they all help me write my chapter here at Johnson College.”

Patrick O’Neill ’12, Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning Technology student, said, “Once you join the Johnson College family, you feel like you never want to leave.”

Johnson College Outgoing Board Chairman Honored with Austin Burke Painting

Scranton, PA – August 13, 2009 – Austin Burke, President of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce was on hand at the College’s annual Board Appreciation Dinner to make a special presentation to Johnson College. Created for the College by Burke was a one of kind painting that captures a portion of campus in spring. “I wanted the painting to reflect the essence of the College; the view many of us are privileged to see as we drive along Main Avenue,” stated Burke. Dr. Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO of Johnson College, Jack Sweeney, outgoing board chairman and Don Kalina, incoming board chairman were all present to accept the painting on the College’s behalf.

The original painting will be housed at the College and smaller versions were presented to all board members as a thank you for their service to the board. Outgoing board chair Jack Sweeney also received a larger version of the painting for his time spent as board chair and his dedication to the College. Sweeney served twelve years as a board member, three of those as Board Chairman.

“It was great to be able to honor Jack with such a unique gift,” states Dr. Pipinski. “Everyone at the College is honored to have had Austin create this wonderful piece for us. I think it beautifully captures the Johnson College we all know and love and will serve as a wonderful memento for Jack and his family.”
