Chris Martin of Martin Guitar to Deliver Johnson College Commencement Address on May 13, 2013

Johnson College will hold its 94th Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 13, 2013 starting at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple, 420 N. Washington Ave, Scranton.

At the commencement ceremony, Johnson College expects to award over 170 Associate Degrees. Along with the presentation of degrees, the program includes: special remarks by this year’s commencement speaker; an address from Dr. Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO; and a statement from Louis A. Costanzo, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Johnson College is pleased to announce that this year’s commencement speaker will be Christian Frederick Martin, IV, Chairman and CEO of the world-renowned C. F. Martin & Co.

C. F. Martin, IV, or “Chris” as he prefers, is the Chairman and CEO of the world-renowned C. F. Martin & Co. and the sixth generation of Martin family members to run the business. Martin acoustic guitars are prized worldwide for their exceptional tone, design, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Under Chris Martin’s direction, the Company has maintained its integrity and industry wide respect while growing and prospering to unprecedented manufacturing and sales levels. Chris is an active community friend and donor to Johnson College.

Christian Frederick Martin, IV, was born on July 8, 1955. He grew up in
New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and his familiarity with the family business was limited to occasional visits to his grandfather, Christian Frederick Martin, III, and to summer jobs working at the factory. As a child, Chris took guitar lessons but “still doesn’t play in public.” For a while, he considered a career in marine biology but when he attended UCLA, he majored in economics. While in Los Angeles, Chris apprenticed at Westwood Music, building a classical guitar and familiarizing himself with the retail end of the business. After just a year, he headed back East to work in the guitar factory where he learned more about the design and construction of the Martin guitar and became familiar with many of the different operations. He attended the local community college at night and, after 18 months; he transferred to Boston University’s School of Management, earning a bachelor degree in 1978.

Chris then moved to Nazareth where he became more involved in the company, first as assistant to the president, then as vice president of marketing. When
C. F. Martin, III passed away in 1986 at the age of 93, the heir apparent was still learning about the Martin Guitar Company and he was inexperienced in running a business. Chris was also only 30 years old. Nonetheless, after a short transition, the somewhat hesitant members of the board named him chairman.

The Martin Guitar Company was not doing well when Chris took over. The preceding decade had been one of decline for the organization. Following an expensive factory expansion, there had been a severe economic recession and a strike by Martin employees. The effect of the economic downturn was compounded by a change in popular taste from folk music to electric guitars, disco and digital keyboards. In an effort to keep up with the times, the company had diversified aggressively, acquiring a drum company, a banjo manufacturing firm, a guitar string company and a guitar factory in Sweden. Of all its acquisitions, only the string company was to survive.

Shortly before Chris took over, The Martin Guitar Company cut its work force. In 1982 production had dropped to just 3,153 instruments, the lowest since World War II. Following C. F. Martin, III’s death, serious consideration was given to either selling or liquidating the company.

The new, young Chairman was determined to put the company back on track. After taking over a family business that had been in existence for over 150 years, Chris did not want to be the one to write the final chapter. He took a short course in strategic planning, was personally transformed by Outward Bound, learned public speaking and eventually re-focused the company and its employees on its primary strengths: steel stringed acoustic guitars and strings.

Chris believes in a team approach and he demands that management and employees be involved in The Martin Guitar Company’s annual strategic plan. This document is not simply prepared and filed, but is carefully created and ultimately implemented and embraced at every level. Chris regularly joins both management and hourly workers on Outward Bound programs, believing that the experience forces people to look both to themselves and members of their team for cooperative survival.

Chris’ decade-long efforts to turn the company around has succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. Last year was The Martin Guitar Company’s most successful in the organization’s 173-year history. Martin has re-established its reputation worldwide as the builder of the highest quality guitars. Eric Clapton and Paul Simon are among the artists who have chosen to be involved in designing new limited edition guitars, and Martin once again makes more acoustic guitars than any other company in the U. S. The process is difficult and time consuming, but it’s also rewarding. Interestingly, some of the biggest competition for Martin comes from used Martin guitars which are sought after by both performers and collectors.

The Martin Guitar Company is thriving under Chris’ direction. His team-oriented management style is friendly and personal, yet firm and direct. Chris travels extensively in order to stay abreast of market trends and to hold instructional clinics at Martin dealerships around the world.

On May 19, 1990, Chris married Diane S. Repyneck, district justice from Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown, Pa. Several days after Chris had appeared in her courtroom for a traffic violation, he called to ask Diane to consider having dinner with a lawbreaker. She consented.

Ball Aerospace Technician to Deliver Johnson College Commencement Address

Johnson College will hold its 93rd Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12, 2012 starting at 10:00 a.m.

Johnson College is pleased to announce that this year’s commencement speaker will be Ed Ruskus ‘77, Senior Mechanical Technician at Ball Aerospace in Colorado. Ed is also a 1977 graduate of the College’s Machine Trades Program. An alumnus was chosen to deliver the address in order to celebrate the College’s 100th Anniversary since its founding in 1912.

New York City born and raised, Ed Ruskus moved with his parents to Pennsylvania when he was fourteen years old. Upon graduation from Pittston Area High School, his father gave him two options – trade school or the military. Not one for the military life, Ed chose trade school. A picture of a micrometer became the pivotal point to make his trade of choice – machining. The Johnson School of Technology was chosen and Ed graduated in 1977.

After graduation and a stint in a tool and die shop in Wilkes-Barre, Ed packed up his car with a couple of buddies and headed towards the mountains of Colorado. It was a move that would change the course of his life. After working in a couple of small machine shops in Boulder, Ed landed his career job of thirty-two years and counting at Ball Aerospace in 1980.

What lay before him was a career starting out with the machining of basic aerospace parts. His work quickly grew into Ed becoming an intricate team member for a program that built the Space Shuttle Star Trackers program. The magnitude of the programs would become more complex with Ed’s involvement in the Hubble Space Telescope Corrective Optics program and subsequently a multitude of projects supporting our national security.

In 1997, the opportunity availed itself for Ed to move into the Commercial Division of the company. He became the lead tech in the first Commercial American Launch from Plesestk, Russia. The satellite program, which had some mishaps along the way, was eventually launched and was the beginning of pioneering imagery that changed the way we look at the earth on the Internet today. Ed also participated with the team that built the Deep Impact Mission that hit the Temple One Comet in 2005.

Over the course of the last five years, Ed has been a major team leader in the building and launching of a series of global imaging satellites. His latest project was the highly successful build and launch of the NASA NPP Weather Satellite, a system that will help meteorologists predict potentially deadly storms.

Personally, Ed has been married to his wife Cheri for the past twenty-six years. They have raised their two children, Travis and Bailey, who both are following a culinary career path currently in San Francisco.

WNEP-TV’s Ryan Leckey Set to Deliver Johnson College Commencement Address

Johnson College will hold its 92nd Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 15, 2011 starting at 11:00 a.m.

Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO; a speech by a recipient of an Award for Academic Excellence; and a statement from Donald Kalina, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Johnson College is pleased to announce that this year’s commencement speaker will be Ryan Leckey, reporter for WNEP-TV.

Ryan Leckey, who Pennsylvania viewers often call ‘the Leckenator,’ is known for his energetic storytelling of breaking news as well as his iconic interviews with notable figures such as Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Whoopi Goldberg, and President Bill Clinton.

Ryan got his start in television right out of high school when he was eighteen years old at WJAC-TV (NBC) in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This is the same station he used to visit as a middle-schooler when he would pitch teen segment ideas to the general manager.

While working in his hometown, Ryan began his career behind the scenes, learning how to execute a newscast before moving to the news department a short time later. There, Ryan worked primarily as a one-man-band — shooting, writing, and editing his own stories. While at WJAC, he solo-anchored his first newscast at age nineteen and before leaving the station in 2005, he had reported, anchored, and filled-in on the weather segments. All of this professional experience occurred while Ryan was earning his Bachelor’s degree in Communication at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

In 2005, Ryan accepted a reporter position at WNEP-TV, one of America’s highest rated television stations. The News Station is based near Scranton, PA. In the beginning, Ryan worked mornings and weekends for two years before moving to Monday through Friday broadcasts, where he became one of the familiar faces on Newswatch 16 This Morning. Not only did Ryan become a regular personality, he also implemented and still produces his own segment called “Leckey Live.” The almost daily television spot highlights community causes and special projects, including “Leckey’s Look at The View,” which gave viewers an all-access pass to the ABC daytime talk show and in-depth interviews with the hosts. Ryan’s other well known projects include: “One-On-One With Diane Sawyer,” “Fight Fat This Fall,” and “Slim Down for Summer,” which helped viewers shed the pounds through an interactive multi-media format.

One of Ryan’s biggest accomplishments while living and working in Northeastern & Central Pennsylvania includes his “Ryan’s Run” campaign in 2010. In conjunction with running the I-N-G New York City Marathon, Ryan, along with WNEP-TV Viewers, helped raise more than $120,000 in less than two months for kids with disabilities at Allied Services Pediatric Program. The NYC Marathon later labeled “Ryan’s Run” as a Bronze Charity because of the significant amount of money it raised in such a short amount of time. The Bronze Charity status put the campaign on the same world stage as the Michael J. Fox & The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundations.

Ryan has also earned a Master’s Degree in Communication Arts with a Concentration in Media Management from Marywood University, where he currently teaches courses in Media Performance and Broadcast News Writing.

When he’s not on the air or in the classroom, Ryan can be found hosting community events or making music.
