Johnson College Receives $100,000 Matching Grant

Johnson College has been awarded a $100,000 matching grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). The grant benefits the Training Equipment Purchase Project for the College’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Program and its Center for Sustainability.

ARC is a regional economic development agency that represents a partnership of federal, state, and local government. Established by an act of Congress in 1965, ARC is composed of the governors of the thirteen Appalachian states and a federal co-chair, who is appointed by the President. Local participation is provided through multi-county local development districts. ARC awards grants to projects that address one or more of the four goals identified by ARC in its strategic plan and that can demonstrate measurable results.

The ARC funding is designated for the purchase of equipment in order to prepare students for the great employment demand for HVAC Technicians and Certificate of Completion Programs under the Center for Sustainability at Johnson College.

Johnson College teaches technical skills through exposure to real world applications and equipment. These equipment purchases will enable students to receive the most current training available and enhance their learning experience and employment skills. HVAC students will continue to learn heating and cooling principles and skills on the latest various makes and models of equipment and components actually found in the industry. The Center of Sustainability at Johnson College will continue to offer training on state-of-the-art equipment at its Welding Training Center for individuals seeking opportunities in the Natural Gas Industry. In the near future, the Center will also be developing programming to address the burgeoning renewable energy field.

A team of representatives from ARC, the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), and NEPA Alliance recently visited Johnson College to tour the HVAC facility and to meet with the College staff to discuss the Training Equipment Purchase Project.

Welding Training Returns To Johnson College

Article Series:
Johnson College’s Welding Training Center

As the Center for Sustainability at Johnson College evolves, one of the newest endeavors under this initiative is the opening of the Welding Training Center.

Johnson College has continually taken a lead role in regional economic development and community partnerships by developing programs that complement business trends and train students for high-demand occupations. The Center for Sustainability focuses on programming that provides industry-driven curriculum pertaining to a regional understanding and application of green and sustainable concepts.

Currently, a significant business trend focuses on the natural gas industry. While the development of natural gas from the Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale is in its earliest phase, the demand for a skilled workforce is already rapidly expanding. Johnson College’s Welding Training Center now provides training to serve the natural gas industry.

In 2002, after thirty-three years, Johnson College suspended its respected Welding Program due to declining enrollment. Recently, the need to bring welding training back to the College became apparent to Marie Allison, Director of Continuing Education.

“At this time, there is an increased demand for welders due to the natural gas industry. Johnson College, given its reputation and history with welding education, has the chance to make a difference in the lives of job seekers,” explains Ms. Allison. “Our Welding Training Center strives to equip individuals with the skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions as welders for the gas industry.”

Classes are underway at Johnson College’s Welding Training Center. Welding is the process of joining separate pieces of metal in a metallic bond and can be performed under a number of conditions by using a variety of methods. The courses presently offered include Basic Cutting & Welding for Pressure Pipelines and Pipe Welding. Applications are now being accepted. Day and evening classes are available.

The Welding Training Center also provides booth rentals as well as customized job training. Welding instructor Jeff Roughgarden states, “Our training doesn’t only benefit those who wish to find careers in the natural gas industry. Jobs for individuals with entry-level welding skills can be found across multiple industry sectors.”

Johnson College will be holding an Open House for its Welding Training Center on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and formal remarks commence at 4:00 p.m. The Welding Training Center is located at 2001 Rosanna Avenue, Unit A, in Scranton. Prospective students, employers, and the general public are welcome to attend. The Open House will feature information about classes, a tour of the facilities, and the chance to speak with representatives from the College. Individuals can RSVP for the Open House by calling Cathy Beckage, Continuing Education Assistant, at 570-702-8979 or cbeckage@johnson.edu.

Johnson College’s Welding Training Center will be further highlighted in the coming weeks. For more information at this time, please visit www.johnson.edu or contact Ms. Allison at 570-702-8924 or mallison@johnson.edu.

Weatherization Training Prospers at Johnson College

Article Series:
Center for Sustainability at Johnson College

Part 2

One of the current initiatives of the Center for Sustainability at Johnson College is weatherization training.

In October 2009, Governor Edward G. Rendell devoted $1.1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to the development of a weatherization workforce in Pennsylvania.

The investment would allow more than 1,000 Pennsylvanians to pursue weatherization career pathways. A statement from Governor Rendell’s office, explained, “The awards and training are part of a joint effort by the departments of Labor & Industry and Community and Economic Development to enhance a Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) that will provide training and career-focused employment to Pennsylvania’s workforce, create green jobs, improve residential energy efficiency and speed the commonwealth’s economic recovery.”
Six grant recipients were chosen to become certified weatherization training providers. These providers now help identify, train and certify workers to complete high-quality energy reduction, conservation and weatherization activities in approximately 29,000 single- and multi-family homes across Pennsylvania. As one of the grant recipients, Johnson College was awarded $132,000 to provide this specialized training.

Johnson College is currently one of only seven weatherization training providers in the state. The College offers certified weatherization training to individuals living in Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Wayne, and Wyoming counties.

Weatherization focuses on making homes more energy efficient, maximizing energy and minimizing costs. Weatherization procedures include, but are not limited to, window and door replacement, weather stripping, attic insulation, and heating and cooling equipment repair and replacement.

The training that Johnson College is providing is the first of its kind in Northeastern Pennsylvania. All training takes place at Simplex Industries in Scranton. Simplex, a leader in modular home production, is a strong advocate of green building practices.

Currently, students can receive certification as Installers, Crew Chiefs, and Auditors. Under supervision, Weatherization Installers install weatherization materials and repair home items that relate to energy efficiency. Weatherization Crew Chiefs provide supervision for a weatherization crew. Weatherization Auditors perform energy audits on homes to determine weatherization measures and home repairs required to improve energy efficiency.

Johnson College’s weatherization training courses began in February 2010. Since that time, Johnson College has fully trained and certified 41 students as Installers. 35 additional students are currently enrolled in the training and are on the path to becoming certified Installers, Crew Chiefs, or Auditors.

“Weatherization training is becoming an integral part of Johnson College and its Continuing Education department. This is an emerging industry and we are excited about the prospect of training individuals for new jobs in such a difficult economy,” stated Marie Allison, Johnson College’s Director of Continuing Education.

Prospective weatherization students can contact their nearest PA CareerLink® office for enrollment information. Visit http://www.pacareerlink.state.pa.us for details.

A website for the Center for Sustainability at Johnson College will be available soon. Until then, visit www.johnson.edu for updates.
