A free “Best Practices in Collision Repair Workshop” will be held in Johnson College’s Moffat Building Cafeteria on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 starting at 4:00 p.m.

This workshop is being presented by the US Environmental Protection Agency Region 3, the US EPA Design for the Environment, the PA SBDC Environmental Management Assistance Program, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Information will be presented on the following: Design for the Environment: Auto Refinish Project; Regulatory Review: Overview of the NESHAP: Paint Stripping and Miscellaneous Surface Coating (6H); A Painter’s Perspective; Best Practices to Reduce Exposures and Emissions; Health & Safety Management in the Collision Repair Shop; Energy Efficiency in the Auto Body Shop.

Johnson College’s own Michael Novak, Diesel Truck Technology Department Chairperson, currently co-hosts a radio show on 94.3 THE TALKER.

Mr. Novak, along with David Manasek, owner of Manasek Auto Parts, Inc. (a NAPA Dealership) in Dickson City, presents a weekly informational show titled “NEPA Fix-It Facts.” The pair uses their expertise to help listeners troubleshoot issues involving everything from lawnmowers to trucks.

“NEPA Fix-It Facts” airs every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on 94.3 THE TALKER in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Johnson College will hold Pennsylvania State Motor Vehicle Inspection classes on September 14, 15 and 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the College’s Automotive Center.

The fee for the course is $160 per person plus $6.00 for the course manual. In addition to the classroom hours, requirements also include a two-hour tactile test to be scheduled with the instructor before receiving certification from PennDOT. There is an additional charge of $40 each for motorcycle certification and certification for heavy trucks and buses.

Registration is limited to twenty-five people and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to receipt of payment. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid operator’s license for each class of vehicle for which they seek certification.

On Wednesday, January 20, 2010, the SkillsUSA District I Competition took place on Johnson College’s campus. The College teamed up with the West Side Career and Technology Center, Kingston, to arrange this event.

SkillsUSA connects students and teachers of public career and technical programs with industry leaders, promoting a skilled workforce in America. The SkillsUSA Championship showcases the trade skills of students. The contest begins locally then continues to state and national levels.

Students from ten different vocational schools in Northeastern Pennsylvania competed in the District I Competition. Johnson College hosted exams in Automotive Service Specialization, Automotive Technician Technology, Precision Machining Technology, and Power Equipment Technology.

Johnson College students helped to administer the testing and Robert Murray ‘82, Automotive Technology Chair, Andrew Zwanch ‘82, Precision Machining Technology Chair, and Michael Novak, Diesel Truck Technology Chair, acted as judges.

On November 18, 2009, Johnson College students in the programs of Automotive Technology, Carpentry and Cabinetmaking Technology, Diesel Truck Technology, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology, and Precision Machining Technology gathered to observe a tool demonstration given by NAPA Auto Parts.

Sterling Oddo, a representative from NAPA, gave the students a brief overview of the company’s vision, resources, and locations. NAPA is a leader in its industry with more than 380,000 parts, 6,000 store locations, and 64 distribution centers.

Mr. Oddo exhibited a variety of tools. At the close of the demonstration, students were able to examine these items and take a look inside the NAPA Tool Truck. Each student was also presented with a NAPA Student Discount Card. The card offers significant savings, allowing them to build up their own professional tool collection while still in college.

David Manasek, President of Manasek Auto Parts, Inc./NAPA Auto Parts, values the partnership between NAPA and Johnson College. Mr. Manasek explained to the students, “The quality of education you are receiving here at Johnson College is a great asset to you in the job market today. Roseann Martinetti, Johnson College’s Associate Director of Constituent Relations, invited Mary Jo Preno Yanusauskas, Toyota Scranton’s Customer Relations Manager, to tour Johnson College this month. Robert Murray, Automotive Technology Chair, and Michael Novak, Diesel Truck Technology Chair, were on hand to give Ms. Yanusauskas overviews of their program areas.

Ms. Yanusauskas is researching the needs of Toyota Scranton concerning automotive interns and technicians. She discussed the possibility of internships for Johnson College students. Among the experiences offered through these internships, students would have the opportunity to work on hybrid engines. Full- and part- time positions would also be available for students and alumni as changes are made at Toyota Scranton.

Ms. Martinetti explains, “The technical preparation of our students in addition to the accent on excellent customer service training is unique and very important to employers.”
