Friday, October 7, 2011 is First Friday Scranton’s College Night!

Be sure to check out the Johnson College exhibit! The exhibit will be at the Connell Building (129 N. Washington Ave, Downtown Scranton) from 6pm-9pm. We’ll have pieces from our Precision Machining Technology and Architectural Drafting & Design Technology programs as well as the creative work of individual students! There will also be live music provided by our students!

As part of the Annual Portfolio Competition, each senior ADT student organizes a collection of both hand-drafted and Computer Aided Design (CAD) work samples. This year’s competition also included drawings created in Revit, which is a Building Information Modeling program. These portfolios demonstrate the range of each student’s drafting and design skills.

As always, John DeAngelis, ADT Program Chairperson, invited industry professionals from local companies to serve as judges. This year’s judges included:

The Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Bridge Building Competition website explains, “The objective of the competition is to provide a scientific/educational learning experience that promotes a learning opportunity to encourage excelling in scientific and academic competence… This program hopes to encourage youth to investigate career opportunities in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.”

At the competition, Mr. DeAngelis and his fellow judges inspected entries to ensure that each adhered to the specifications outlined by the International Bridge Building Committee.

This year’s first place winner was Seneca Propst of Honesdale High School, whose bridge demonstrated an efficiency of 2998.236332. Winners advance to the 2011 International Bridge Building Contest which will be held in Chicago, IL in May.

2011 Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Bridge Building Competition entries

Over the years, Johnson College’s modular homes have been purchased by first time homeowners, families, and those looking for vacation homes. Many times, the customer has been part of the planning process and specified the number of rooms and layouts themselves.

The College’s CCMT Program prepares students as entry-level technicians in layout, estimation, construction, and erection of residential construction including installation of trim, furniture, stairs, and cabinets. Each year, the modular home construction process allows students to apply their skills in an authentic setting using industry standard tools and equipment. The students build a typical modular home, which includes drywall, cabinets, windows, electricity, and plumbing. Modular homes are different than mobile homes. They are created in boxes. These prefabricated boxes are then transported to the building site for the completion of construction.

John L. du Fief III ’79, a graduate of Johnson College’s CCMT Program, says of the construction of the modular home, “It afforded us, as students, to learn to actually construct a house from the ground up. To fit all the components together and understand how each step relates to the previous step… we learned that each step had to be completed with accuracy, in order to go on to the next step.”

After Mr. du Fief graduated in 1979, he began working at John L. duFief, Inc., a small family-owned construction company that his father established in 1958. In 1988, he took over as President of the company. He explains, “While at Johnson College, I learned that good workmanship will always be rewarded… My work holds up and my reputation for my attention to detail is without equal.”

Simplex Industries, Inc., of Scranton, partners with Johnson College in order to commence the engineering and building process. Additionally, students from the Architectural Drafting & Design Technology, Electrical Construction & Maintenance Technology, and Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Technology programs provide their expertise during construction. The homes are inspected by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Industrial Housing Department in order to ensure that the building meets all local and state regulations before sale.

Joseph Musheno ’78, CCMT Program Chairperson, states, “There is a tremendous amount of knowledge gained from real live work experiences. Our students benefit immensely by building the modular home. It is also something that the students will be forever proud of.”

Construction of this year’s modular home is currently underway. The home, which will have three bedrooms and two bathrooms, is available for purchase. Interested home buyers can contact Mr. Musheno at 570-702-8933 or jmusheno@johnson.edu for more details.

No prior experience with computer-aided design (CAD) is necessary. However, experience with architectural design, drafting, and/or engineering is suggested.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to understand the benefits of Building Information Modeling, use the fundamental features of Revit® Architecture, use parametric 3D design tools to design projects, create detailing and drafting views, and use the presentation tools for presenting models.

Tuition is $475.00 per person or $450.00 for Johnson College Alumni.

This Annual Portfolio Competition aims to give students a sense of pride in their work and encourages professionalism when completing assignments. Each senior student prepares a portfolio, which is an organized collection of work samples that demonstrates his or her Architectural Drafting and Design skills. The portfolios can be comprised of an assortment of hand-drafted designs and Computer Aided Design (CAD) projects.

Every year, John DeAngelis, Architectural Drafting and Design Technology Program chairperson, invites industry professionals from local companies to judge his senior students’ portfolios. Each judge rates each portfolio on a scale of one to ten. The totals are added and the students with the highest scores receive first place, second place, third place, and honorable mention certificates.

This year, thirteen seniors participated in the competition. Judges included Donald Baron ‘92 of Willow Design, Inc., William Jones of The Palumbo Group, Heath Middaugh ’07 of Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., and Ronald N. Moskalczak ‘71 of Ronald N. Moskalczak Drafting Service.

The competition allows students to display their understanding of scientific and engineering principles. Each student constructs a model wooden bridge that is tested to determine the amount of pressure and weight it can withstand. Winners are eligible to advance to the International Bridge Building Competition to be held on May 1, 2010 in Philadelphia, PA.

Mr. DeAngelis used his expertise in Architectural Drafting & Design Technology to inspect the competition entries. As one of fifteen judges, he checked that bridges adhered to the specifications set by the International Bridge Building Committee.

McTish, Kunkle and Associates offers Professional Consulting Engineering and Environmental and Construction Management Services to a wide range of clients throughout Pennsylvania including PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, municipal governments, airports, railroads, public and private agencies, residential and commercial developers, and the construction industry. Federal stimulus money supports these projects.

Mr. Bartkovsky spoke to the students about the recent job openings made possible by his company’s work with PennDOT. He explained that while unemployment is currently affecting many people, individuals employed in this field are fortunate. “This is where the work is, and everyone knows roads always have to be fixed,” he said.

McTish, Kunkle, and Associates is looking for motivated and ambitious individuals. “We want you to be eager to learn and enthusiastic,” he stated. The positions available are for transportation construction inspectors and construction management. Duties for these jobs include writing reports, quality control, doing calculations, taking measurements, practicing safety, and handling documentation. The Architectural Drafting and Design students were eager to obtain job applications.

Mr. Bartkovsky asserted that attending Johnson College was a great opportunity for him and is happy that the College continues to provide hands-on training for students.
