Johnson College

On September 18, 2011, Johnson College was home to Cars on Campus 2011.

The event raised $5,277 for the Johnson College Cars on Campus Scholarship, exceeding the $5,000 goal. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year student with financial need who shows persistence in his or her studies in a technical trade area.

Over 120 registrants displayed their classic cars and unique vehicles to the delight of hundreds of car lovers, alumni, students, and community friends.

Co-chair Rudi Dickinson ’11, shares, “One of the best aspects of Cars on Campus is the variety of vehicle classes that it attracts. We see everything from semi-trucks to muscle cars.”

Attendees enjoyed refreshments and music provided by DJs Brian Langan and Conor McGuigan while they walked around the vehicles exhibited on the Johnson College campus. Highlights included the Nostalgia Super Stock Fords displayed by 422 Motorsports and Charlie Conrad’s 1964 Chevy Corvette which won the Best in Show Award in 2010 and was the 2011 Show Car.

Awards were presented in a variety of categories. Big winners included Sam Zangardi of Wyoming, PA, whose 1961 Corvette won the Best in Show Award for 2011, and Anne Rosiello of Milford, PA, whose 1965 Cobra won the President’s Pick Award.

Patrick A. Fricchione, Sr., retired President and CEO of Simplex Industries, Inc., and Adeline Fricchione recently visited Johnson College to celebrate the establishment of The P. Fricchione and Sons Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student in good academic standing, who has financial need and is majoring in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technology program.

The Fricchiones shared, “Many worthy workers at Simplex Industries, Inc. came from Johnson College and we are showing our gratitude to the College. We are trying to perpetuate the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning knowledge that our father and brothers began many years ago in this community.”

In September 2011, Jeff Roughgarden, Johnson College’s Welding Training Center Instructor, successfully passed the American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector/Certified Welding Educator (CWI/CWE) exam.

The CWI/CWE training included 40 hours of classroom time followed by a six-hour exam consisting of welding fundamentals, code, and hands-on weld inspection. The CWE Program is geared toward the welding professional in the welding education field and confirms an individual’s ability, talent, and knowledge to direct and perform operations associated with welder training and classroom instruction. A CWI certification is widely respected, both nationally and internationally, and successful companies have come to rely on this AWS certification when ensuring the highest level of quality workmanship.

As an AWS CWI/CWE, Mr. Roughgarden is recognized worldwide as an industry leader in weld inspection and quality control.

“Johnson College is very proud of Jeff’s accomplishment and we are excited that we can now offer AWS Welder Qualification tests to students, companies, and individuals in the community,” states Marie Allison, Director of Continuing Education.

In addition to offering AWS Welder Qualification tests, the College will continue to provide welding training. Basic Cutting and Welding and Professional Welder courses are scheduled to start January 9, 2012.

This year, George J. Hallesky, Ed. D., Johnson College’s Director of Student Support Services, was named Associate Ambassador for the American Cancer Society’s Ball of Hope fundraiser, an exciting black-tie event that attracts more than 400 attendees annually. Many Johnson College students will also be volunteering for this worthwhile cause.

The Ball of Hope will take place at the Scranton Cultural Center on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6pm-11pm.

Johnson College will hold Pennsylvania State Motor Vehicle Inspection classes on November 8, 9, and 15, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Weaver Building Automotive Classroom. The College is located at 3427 North Main Avenue in Scranton.

Registration is limited to 25 people and will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis according to receipt of payment. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid operator’s license for each class of vehicle for which they seek certification.

The fee for the course is $160 per person plus $6.00 for the course manual. There is an additional charge of $40 each for motorcycle certification and certification for heavy trucks and buses.

In addition to the classroom hours, requirements also include a two-hour tactile test to be scheduled with the instructor before receiving certification from PennDOT.

Alumni, who graduated from Johnson College between 2001 and 2011, gathered together at the Backyard Ale House in Scranton this past Summer for a Young Alum Mixer.

Young Alum Mixers help alumni stay connected to the College, network with fellow graduates, and catch up with faculty and staff.

“This was a great way to welcome Johnson College’s newest alumni – the Class of 2011,” stated, Drew Koltis ’04. “I look forward to participating in more events and projects with fellow young alumni.”

In August, Johnson College hosted its President’s Spirit of Giving Reception at the Colonnade in Scranton. This annual event celebrates the past year’s achievements and thanks the donors who made it all possible.

At this year’s Spirit of Giving Reception, three students shared their inspiring stories with the College’s faculty, staff, alumni, and donors.

“I think of Johnson College like the hand that drops a pebble into a pond. It may just be a little pebble, but the ripples that are created go on and on,” stated Carly Leach ’12, Radiologic Technology student.

Justine Olsommer ’12, Veterinary Technology student, shared, “Because of my experiences, I have the opportunity to meet many new faces and form close relationships with not only classmates, but faculty, staff, board members, community members and possible future employers. In my book of life, these relationships are not just temporary; they all help me write my chapter here at Johnson College.”

Patrick O’Neill ’12, Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning Technology student, said, “Once you join the Johnson College family, you feel like you never want to leave.”

Johnson College will hold an Open House for prospective students and their families on Saturday, October 22, 2011 starting at 9:30 a.m.

Open House activities will include information sessions on the admissions process, on-site applications, information on financial aid*, and student services such as housing, student life, student support, athletics, and career services. Tours of each technical area will also be conducted and department chairs will be available to review the specifics of their programs.

Those interested in attending the Open House can register online at www.johnson.edu/openhouse or by calling Admissions at 570-702-8900. Application fees will be waived for those who apply at the Open House.

This event will be held in the Moffat Building, located on the College’s campus at 3427 North Main Avenue in Scranton, which is off exit 190 on I-81.

* Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
