Article Series:
Johnson College’s Welding Training Center
Part 1

As the Center for Sustainability at Johnson College evolves, one of the newest endeavors under this initiative is the opening of the Welding Training Center.

Johnson College has continually taken a lead role in regional economic development and community partnerships by developing programs that complement business trends and train students for high-demand occupations. The Center for Sustainability focuses on programming that provides industry-driven curriculum pertaining to a regional understanding and application of green and sustainable concepts.

Currently, a significant business trend focuses on the natural gas industry. While the development of natural gas from the Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale is in its earliest phase, the demand for a skilled workforce is already rapidly expanding. Johnson College’s Welding Training Center now provides training to serve the natural gas industry.

In 2002, after thirty-three years, Johnson College suspended its respected Welding Program due to declining enrollment. Recently, the need to bring welding training back to the College became apparent to Marie Allison, Director of Continuing Education.

“At this time, there is an increased demand for welders due to the natural gas industry. Johnson College, given its reputation and history with welding education, has the chance to make a difference in the lives of job seekers,” explains Ms. Allison. “Our Welding Training Center strives to equip individuals with the skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions as welders for the gas industry.”

Classes are underway at Johnson College’s Welding Training Center. Welding is the process of joining separate pieces of metal in a metallic bond and can be performed under a number of conditions by using a variety of methods. The courses presently offered include Basic Cutting & Welding for Pressure Pipelines and Pipe Welding. Applications are now being accepted. Day and evening classes are available.

The Welding Training Center also provides booth rentals as well as customized job training. Welding instructor Jeff Roughgarden states, “Our training doesn’t only benefit those who wish to find careers in the natural gas industry. Jobs for individuals with entry-level welding skills can be found across multiple industry sectors.”

Johnson College will be holding an Open House for its Welding Training Center on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and formal remarks commence at 4:00 p.m. The Welding Training Center is located at 2001 Rosanna Avenue, Unit A, in Scranton. Prospective students, employers, and the general public are welcome to attend. The Open House will feature information about classes, a tour of the facilities, and the chance to speak with representatives from the College. Individuals can RSVP for the Open House by calling Cathy Beckage, Continuing Education Assistant, at 570-702-8979 or cbeckage@johnson.edu.

Johnson College’s Welding Training Center will be further highlighted in the coming weeks. For more information at this time, please visit www.johnson.edu or contact Ms. Allison at 570-702-8924 or mallison@johnson.edu.

Students from Johnson College’s Precision Machining Technology Program recently used their welding expertise to help the Marvine Dutch Gap Little League in Scranton.

The community service project came about after the League’s Maureen O’Malley requested that Andrew Zwanch ‘82, Precision Machining Technology Chairperson, and his students help perform some much needed repairs around the baseball field. The project involved straightening and welding together a section of wrought iron railing and repairing areas of the metal steps alongside the field’s clubhouse.

Precision Machining Technology students receive over forty hours of welding training during their time in the program. The project for Marvine Dutch Gap Little League gave them the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real world setting. With the guidance of Mr. Zwanch and Matthew Sleboda ‘84, Technical Assistant, the students prepared the material, followed detailed instructions on the process, and learned how to operate a portable welding unit.

“The students agreed that it was nice to be able to help out the Little League because it is a vital member of the community,” says Mr. Zwanch.

This month, Johnson College will host a Golden Alumni Luncheon to honor the College’s “golden” alumni who graduated fifty or more years ago. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 30th starting at noon in the College’s Moffat Building Cafeteria at 3427 North Main Avenue, Scranton.

The Golden Alumni Luncheon will give attendees the chance to walk down memory lane, reconnect with fellow alumni, and acquaint themselves with the Johnson College of today. The event is free and will include a catered lunch as well as a guided tour of campus. Remarks will be made by alumni, staff members, and Dr. Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO of Johnson College.

Tami Pease, Johnson College’s Associate Director of Development, states, “It’s important to me to reinforce relationships between Johnson College and our ‘golden’ alumni. The College has such a rich history which they truly embody. They have so many personal and professional success stories to share. At the Golden Alumni Luncheon, I want everyone to celebrate the College’s past and dream about what the future holds.”

This luncheon came about thanks to Michael Remetta ’57 and his wife Norma. They approached Ms. Pease about organizing a special event that would appeal to the College’s “golden” alumni.

“Johnson College has come all long way in fifty years and I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to get everyone together after all these years. I’m looking forward to seeing all of them,” shares Mr. Remetta.

Johnson College “golden” alumni interested in attending this event can contact Ms. Pease at 570-702-8909 or tlpease@johnson.edu.

On May 14, 2010, golfers, sponsors, and volunteers gathered to enjoy the 18th Annual Johnson College Open. Proceeds from this annual golf tournament benefit the College’s Presidential Scholarship Fund. This year, over $25,000 was raised, allowing the College to provide financial aid to three qualified and deserving students.

The 18th Annual Johnson College Open took place at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop. The sun emerged after some morning rain, giving way to an ideal day for golf. Thirty teams, made up of over one hundred and thirty golfers, participated in the event. This included a record number of twelve Johnson College Alumni. The tournament’s winning team was Team Shea Demolition, comprised of Joseph Shea ‘85, Andy Olexavitch, John Connell, and John Hayduk ’74. This marks the second consecutive year Team Shea Demolition has won the tournament.

After the tournament, sponsors joined Dr. Ann L. Pipinski, President and CEO of Johnson College, in congratulating this year’s Presidential Scholarship recipients — Christina Skorupa ‘12, Dylan Harhut ‘12, and Carly Leach ’12. The three incoming students are extremely grateful for this financial assistance and eager to start classes this fall.

Ms. Leach states, “I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those who made it possible for me to receive the Presidential Scholarship. I am so grateful for this opportunity to further my education. Your generosity has enabled me to look forward to a brighter future and will not go unappreciated.”
