Last week Johnson College’s Diesel Truck Technology students provided their annual community service project to the Justus Volunteer Fire Company, Station 28, by performing preventative maintenance on their company vehicles.
The Diesel Truck Technology Department was contacted first in 2003 by the fire chief at the time, Dave Makala, to provide service on the vehicles. The College continues to perform service checks under the current fire chief, Jamie Sanko. Mike Novak, Chairperson of the Diesel Truck Technology Program, said, “[The firefighters] do something I could never do, but it’s a way [to] give back… a service to the community.”
The entire project is run by the students: from planning when the vehicles are to come in, to which parts need to be ordered from where. The students are graded on their work on the vehicles, while the volunteer fire department receives a much needed helping hand from the community they serve.

It is nice that the community is taking an interest in the public good interest. The fact that they spend time maintaining the trucks frees up time for the firemen.
Great article! It’s truly nice to see students who attend your college give back to the community. If we could get a lot more of this, our world would be a better place. This is a very nice thing to see.
This is very cool! I am a volunteer firefighter in Cordelia California (an hour east of San Francisco) and we appreciate any help the community provides us. I commend and solute these students!
It is great to see student giving back, I agree.
Every effort and work we do counts at the end and that is what the students have proved by there generosity. well it sounds the world has become one.
A wonderful service for the community
good learning experience for the students also.
Tow Truck Insurance: this inspiration should be passed and learned by others. Tow trucks, pickup trucks what ever have to maintain properly.
